Environmental Purchasing
Everything we buy has an impact on the environment. Raw materials are sourced from somewhere, converted to products using inputs such as energy and water, and then transported somewhere else. Environmental purchasing is a concept that aims to minimize the environmental impact of everything we buy.
Aside from the environmental benefits, environmental purchasing is important because many large consumers, such as the Victorian Government, are including environmental considerations into their purchasing contracts. In other words, potential suppliers need to provide details about the environmental impact of their products so they can be assessed by buyers.
While most of us consider factors such as quality and price when buying goods, considering the environmental impact of goods and services can be a little more difficult.
To help business with this process, a new program has been launched. It's brand new and best of all, it's free. It's called the EcoBuy Business program.
Other great resources include the Green Pages and the Australian Environmental Labelling Association who have a range of useful resources including the Australian Green Procurement website.
